Nicolas Cage will bring the unmistakable voice, energy and personality of John Madden to screens around the world this November.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that its biographical drama Madden will begin streaming globally on Prime Video on 18 November 2026. The release places the film in the middle of the American football season, when Madden’s influence remains visible throughout the sport.
John Madden was far more than the name printed on a video-game box. He became one of the most recognisable figures in American sports by succeeding in three different careers: professional coaching, television commentary and interactive entertainment.
Cage portrays Madden across that extraordinary journey. The story begins with his rise as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, a team known for powerful personalities, aggressive football and its willingness to challenge convention.
Madden led the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI before unexpectedly leaving coaching while still relatively young. His career then moved into broadcasting, where his enthusiasm and ability to explain complicated plays made football understandable to both experienced fans and casual viewers.
Christian Bale co-stars as Al Davis, the influential and fiercely independent owner of the Raiders. The relationship between Davis and Madden is expected to form one of the film’s central dramatic elements, combining friendship, ambition and disagreements over how the team should be built.
The supporting cast includes Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife, Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Davis’ wife, Carol. John Mulaney portrays Trip Hawkins, the technology entrepreneur who founded Electronic Arts, while comedian Shane Gillis also appears in the production.
David O. Russell wrote, directed and produced the film. His previous work includes The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, films that frequently place eccentric personalities inside highly competitive environments.
One of the movie’s most unusual storylines concerns Madden’s entry into the gaming industry. When Electronic Arts approached him about developing a football simulation, Madden insisted that the game should represent full eleven-player teams instead of using a simplified version of the sport.
That demand made development considerably more difficult, but it helped establish the authenticity that became central to the franchise. The first John Madden Football game appeared in 1988, beginning a series that eventually developed into one of the world’s most successful sporting properties.
The games introduced Madden to younger audiences who may never have watched him coach or heard his live commentary. For millions of players outside the United States, his name became almost inseparable from American football itself.
The film therefore has a broader story to tell than a conventional sporting biography. It examines how one individual moved between physical competition, mass-media entertainment and emerging digital technology.
Cage and Bale are both known for disappearing into unusual characters, and early promotional material has emphasised their physical transformations. However, the success of the film will depend on more than makeup and vocal imitation.
Madden’s public appeal came from his ability to communicate excitement without appearing artificial. He could analyse complex strategy, celebrate enormous athletes and discuss food or travel within the same broadcast, creating an informal connection with viewers.
The November premiere will also introduce his story to an international streaming audience that may recognise the game franchise without knowing the coach and broadcaster behind its name.
John Madden died in December 2021 at the age of 85. His influence continues through football broadcasting, coaching methods and the video-game series that still carries his name.
With Cage leading the cast, Madden will attempt to capture how a former coach became something much larger: a voice in the commentary booth, a teacher of the game and eventually a digital icon recognised across generations.
