The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported the detection of a recombinant mpox virus, created through the natural exchange of genetic material between two circulating mpox strains. Confirmed cases have been identified in the United Kingdom and India, with investigations suggesting that transmission may have involved several countries across multiple WHO regions.
WHO said that recombination is a natural process that can occur when two related viruses infect the same individual. At present, only a small number of cases have been documented, and there is no evidence that the recombinant strain causes more severe disease or spreads more easily than previously known variants. However, health authorities stress that continued monitoring is essential.
The organization is advising countries to maintain strong epidemiological surveillance, expand genomic sequencing, rapidly investigate suspected cases, and continue vaccination and infection-prevention measures for people at higher risk. WHO also encouraged governments to strengthen laboratory capacity to ensure new variants can be detected quickly.
Public health experts say the discovery highlights the importance of global disease surveillance and international cooperation. While the overall public health risk assessment has not changed, researchers will continue studying the recombinant virus to better understand its characteristics and any potential implications for future outbreak control.
