Venus Williams and Alexandra Eala will unite across generations after receiving the final doubles wild card for the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto.
The partnership was officially announced by Tennis Canada on 4 August 2026, confirming that the American tennis legend and the rapidly rising Filipino champion will compete together at Sobeys Stadium.
Williams and Eala are scheduled to face Liudmila Samsonova and established doubles specialist Miyu Kato during the Centre Court night session on Thursday, 6 August.
The match will bring together one of the most accomplished players in tennis history and one of the sport’s fastest-rising young stars.
Williams has won seven Grand Slam singles championships during her distinguished career. She has also enjoyed remarkable success in doubles, particularly alongside her sister Serena Williams.
The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles together, six of which came at major tournaments where Venus also secured the singles championship. Their successful partnership made them one of the most celebrated doubles teams of their generation.
Eala enters the Toronto tournament with growing international attention after winning her first WTA singles title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington.
The Filipina defeated the tournament’s top three seeds, the defending champion and an Olympic gold medallist during her breakthrough run. The result made her the first player representing the Philippines to enter the Top 20 of the PIF WTA Rankings.
Her success has increased interest in tennis across the Philippines and strengthened her position as one of the most prominent young athletes on the women’s tour.
The Toronto appearance will not be the first time Williams and Eala have attempted to form a doubles partnership. They previously reached the quarter-finals together at Bad Homburg during the grass-court season in June.
The pair were expected to compete together again in Washington, but Eala withdrew from doubles to concentrate on her singles return. That decision proved successful when she went on to win the championship.
Williams instead partnered Diana Shnaider in Washington and advanced to the doubles quarter-finals. She also competed in singles but was eliminated by Anastasia Potapova.
The renewed partnership in Toronto gives Williams and Eala another opportunity to develop their understanding as a team.
Williams brings decades of experience, powerful serving and excellent net play, while Eala contributes speed, left-handed shot-making and the confidence generated by her recent title.
Tournament director Karl Hale described the partnership as an exciting combination of a tennis legend and an increasingly popular young champion. He expects their first appearance together at Sobeys Stadium to become one of the tournament’s notable moments.
Eala will also compete in the Toronto singles draw. She is scheduled to begin her campaign in the second round during the night session on Wednesday, 5 August. Tournament organisers confirmed that the session had already sold out.
Williams received wild cards for both the singles and doubles competitions in Toronto. Her singles campaign ended in the first round, but the doubles event provides another opportunity for her to compete before moving to Cincinnati.
She is also expected to partner Serena Williams in the Cincinnati doubles competition after the sisters accepted a wild card. Venus additionally received a singles wild card for that tournament.
