Ukraine's National Olympic Committee has launched a formal appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the International Olympic Committee decided earlier this month to provisionally restore the Russian Olympic Committee's status. Ukrainian officials argue that the conditions which originally led to Russia's suspension have not been fully addressed, making the reinstatement premature.
The Russian Olympic Committee was suspended in 2023 after recognizing regional Olympic bodies in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. According to Ukraine, those actions violated both the Olympic Charter and Ukraine's territorial integrity. The Ukrainian Olympic Committee maintains that reinstating Russia before those issues are resolved undermines the principles of international sport governance.
The appeal asks the Court of Arbitration for Sport to review the IOC's decision, arguing that it conflicts with a previous CAS ruling that upheld Russia's suspension. The case is expected to become one of the most closely watched legal disputes in international sport, as its outcome could influence preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and future IOC disciplinary decisions.
The IOC has stated that its decision followed its own assessment procedures, while Russian sports officials have welcomed the move as an important step toward the country's full return to international competition.
