Mining giant Rio Tinto has signed a long-term agreement with Australian bioenergy producer Superchar to supply renewable bioenergy pellets for use at its Gladstone alumina refineries in Queensland. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028, following successful operational trials and feasibility studies.
The agreement represents an important step in Rio Tinto's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its refining operations. Bioenergy pellets are expected to replace part of the natural gas currently used during alumina production, helping the company progress toward its climate commitments while maintaining operational efficiency.
The partnership also provides a major commercial opportunity for Australia's growing bioenergy industry. Increased demand for renewable industrial fuels is expected to encourage investment in sustainable biomass production and support the transition toward lower-carbon manufacturing across the mining and metals sector.
Business analysts say the agreement highlights how major mining companies are increasingly investing in cleaner technologies while responding to investor expectations for sustainable operations. The deal reinforces Rio Tinto's position as one of the global resource companies pursuing large-scale decarbonization initiatives as industries adapt to the transition toward a lower-carbon economy.
