Angola officially inaugurated the UNESCO Chair on Open Science, Responsible Digitalisation and Social Impact at Óscar Ribas University in Luanda. The launch ceremony was attended by the country's Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, university leaders, and UNESCO representatives, marking a significant step in expanding the country's higher education and research capacity.
The new UNESCO Chair will promote open science, digital public goods, and responsible use of technology in education and research. It aims to strengthen international partnerships between universities, increase the global visibility of Angolan research, and encourage the sharing of scientific knowledge to address challenges in education, healthcare, agriculture, industry, and sustainable development.
According to UNESCO, the initiative is the first UNESCO Chair in Angola focused on Open Science and Digital Public Goods, making it a landmark achievement for both the country and the wider region. The program will support research collaboration, innovation, and the training of future scientists and technology leaders capable of driving Africa's digital transformation.
Education experts have welcomed the announcement, describing it as an important investment in higher education and scientific innovation. They believe the UNESCO Chair will help position Angola as an emerging center for research excellence while contributing to economic growth through knowledge, technology, and international academic cooperation.
